Learn to Play Hockey Programs

The RecPlex Ice Arena offers a comprehensive three-step program to get your new skaters prepared to play hockey on a team. Our Learn to Play program is a pilot to get your child to move to the next level, and onto a team upon graduation from our three-step program. Please reference the Youth Hockey Leagues page for more information on our  Vipers Hockey program.

Hockey Learn to Skate

Ages 2-8. This class is for brand new skaters with no skating experience. Class focuses on balance, beginner stride, getting up and down without assistance, beginner edge-work and entry level hockey skating skills. Classes meet 2x per week for 30 minutes each session.
Minimum equipment needed is a helmet and skates. Skates can be rented at the RecPlex for $3 per session, or a 10 rental punch card for $10 can be purchased for the session.

Jump Start Hockey

Ages 3-8. Completion of one session of Hockey Learn to Skate is recommended for younger skaters. This class offers a general introduction to skating including edgework, stops and starts, stride, and beginner hockey skills. Classes are 30 min 3x per week with two classes focused on skills, and one scrimmage day.  Full equipment is required. Please reference the Equipment Rental Program details below.

Hockey School

Ages 3-11. For skaters who have some skating proficiency. Participants will be taught the basics of hockey including, more advanced skating, stick-handling, shooting, age appropriate body contact, and the basic skills needed to join one of our hockey teams. The Hockey School staff will further break the class into skill based groups. Classes are 50 min and meet 3x per week with two skills classes and one scrimmage day.
